Phone Number: 554-8400

The Department of Dentistry of PGH started as a dental infirmary for the City of Manila on August 13, 1912, two years after PGH was founded. The infirmary also served as the clinical section of the dental department where patients are treated by the students.

Over the years, the dental department started an emergency dental clinic at the emergency room complex to attend to all emergency dental problems. This was the first time the country had a 24 hour dental service training around 5-10 patients in one night. The department has indeed gone a long way. It now has its own operating room schedule on Mondays at the Central block and on Thursday at the new OPD building.

Training

Dental Externship Program

The department of Dentistry provides a full-time, extensive 6-month Externship Training Program to licensed dentists who have passed the qualifying exams given by the department.

The first three months are devoted to general clinics which include extraction of teeth, alveoloplasty and alveolectomy. The second half of the program deals with management of impacted teeth, biopsy of lesions, etc. and other surgical procedures.

The externs are given lectures, Basic Life Support Sessions and workshops on suturing, wiring and venipuncture.

A 24-hour duty is also part of their exposure in the hospital.

A certificate of completion is given to those who have performed satisfactorily during the 6-month training program.

Dental Internship Program

The Dental Internship Program is a 1-year training program in which the trainee undergoes a 3-month period rotation at four (4) different departments, namely: Department of Pathology, Department of Anesthesiology, Department of Surgery (Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Section of Head and Neck Surgery) and the Department of Dentistry.

The completion of the Dental Externship Program with a favorable and satisfactory performance is a prerequisite prior to admission to the Dental Internship Program.

Doc, can I ask your opinion regarding our Practice Management in relation to the new dental law? If the provision says that a DMD can use the term of his specialty (e.g., Dental Surgeon) in signages and/or calling cards, etc. for as long as he took up a residency program from an accredited dental college/university or hospital-based institution (new dental law), or has been conferred with such, how can we tell if the said institution (or preceptorship program) is accredited by the PRC Board of Dentistry? Has the PRC BOD released the accredited institutions/programs to this effect? Thank you and best regards.

Good day. Meron po bang Dental Surgeon sa PGH? If meron paano po ang sistema? Like pipila, etc…. Nakapagpa-xray na po ng ngipin ang asawa ko at sabi po bago bunuti yung affected area, need tanggalin ang wisdom tooth dahil may nakaharang na part ng wisdom tooth. Can you give me an idea magkano po magagastos sa case na ito. Thanks.

Will a master in dentistry in oral and maxillofacial surgery be confered to those who finish the course in the externship or internship programs or just certificate of completion and is it recognized abroad . Thanks

Am not being biased but UP is recognized in other countries as our premier state university. UP-PGH, the same thing (premier state hospital). Am proud to have had my oral surgery training at UP-PGH. The externship program alone is indeed comprehensive. What more the internship. There is no need for you to bring a practice patient. With so many dental patients seeking consult, nearly all kinds of dental cases will be encountered not just once but many times over. And each time, there is always something new to learn. Way back my time, the externship training is 6 months long. Everyday. From 7am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays. You will be assigned to a Dental ER duty on weekends as part of their requirement. At one point you will be exposed to OR duty as well. I don’t think these has changed much except probably the chain of command. And the teaching staff is great! UP-PGH Hospital Dentistry training is worth it, believe me!
